Make a lasting impact in Ugandan communities while experiencing the authentic heart of East Africa. The Kikooko Africa Safaris Volunteer Program connects passionate individuals with meaningful projects focused on education, orphanage support, sustainable agriculture, and sports development.
Program Overview
Education & Teaching
English literacy opens doors to educational and economic opportunities throughout Uganda. As a volunteer, you’ll support local schools and community centers by teaching English and other subjects to children and young adults. Activities include:
- Lesson planning and classroom teaching
- One-on-one tutoring sessions
- Creating engaging educational materials
- Organizing interactive language activities
- Supporting students with reading and writing skills
Orphanage & Project Management
- Helping organize donations and resources
- Developing structured daily routines
- Creating and implementing child welfare programs
- Providing administrative assistance
- Conducting workshops for staff skills development
Sustainable Agriculture
Agriculture is essential to Uganda’s economy and food security. Work alongside community farmers on sustainable agriculture projects:
- Assisting with planting, cultivation and harvesting
- Teaching sustainable farming techniques
- Organizing workshops on crop diversification
- Sharing knowledge on water management and conservation
- Supporting youth-led agricultural initiatives
Sports Development
- Coaching youth teams in popular local sports
- Organizing tournaments and competitions
- Teaching fundamental skills and techniques
- Leading team-building exercises
- Promoting sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles
- 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM: Breakfast and preparation for the day
- 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Morning session at your placement
- 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Lunch break with local staff or community members
- 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM: Afternoon activities and projects
- 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Daily reflection and planning
- Evening: Free time, cultural immersion, or optional local activities
A Day in the Life of a Volunteer
Your daily schedule will vary depending on your placement, but here’s what a typical day might look like:
Weekends are typically free for exploring Uganda’s incredible landscapes, wildlife, and culture. Depending on your placement location, you’ll have access to safari experiences, adventure activities, or cultural excursions.

A grassroots organization improving quality of life in Kafunjo village through education, healthcare, sustainable agriculture, and vocational training programs.

The Kigezi Orphans Project
Supporting orphaned and vulnerable children in the Kigezi region with education, healthcare, nutritional support, and life skills training.

Agro Tourism Association Uganda
Promoting sustainable agricultural practices while creating educational experiences that connect visitors with local farming communities.

Kampala Junior Team
Empowering youth through sports, particularly football, providing structured training, competitions, and life skills development.

The Uganda National Apiculture Development Organisation
Supporting beekeepers and sustainable honey production through training, research, and market development.
Weekend Excursion Opportunities
Your volunteer placement location determines which incredible destinations you can easily visit during weekends:
From Kafunjo Project (Western Uganda):
- Kibale Forest National Park (1 hour away) - Track chimpanzees and 12 other primate species
- Queen Elizabeth National Park (2 hours away) - Safari drives to see four of the Big Five
- Lake Mburo National Park (2 hours away) - Game drives, boat cruises, and horseback safaris
From Kigezi Project (Southwestern Uganda):
- Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (3 hours) - Mountain gorilla tracking in this UNESCO World Heritage site
- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (3 hours) - Gorilla tracking, volcano climbing, and golden monkey experiences
From Kampala-Based Projects:
- Jinja (1 hour away) - Adventure activities at the source of the Nile, including rafting and bungee jumping
- Ssese Islands (1 hour away) - Tropical paradise with beaches, nature walks, and cultural experiences
Program Details
Requirements
- Minimum Age: 16+
- Language: Proficiency in English
- Commitment: Minimum 3-week commitment
- Adaptability: Willingness to embrace local culture and work with limited resources
- Health: Up-to-date vaccinations as recommended for travel to Uganda
Program Cost
- 3-Week Program: $1,400
- Additional Weeks: $500 per week
